Could you constructive it upside down
Starting with the largest octagonal and screw the next size down through to the larger octagonal therefore the screw heads will be concealed

Sounds like an o ring problem

My smaller nail gun sometimes sticks if I haven't used it for a while and I have to manually lubricate it

Sounds like you have a cylinder or piston ring problem and air is leaking past and pressurising the crankcase referred to as blowby Remove the plug in the filler point put your finger over the hole start up the compressor and you should not feel any pressure build up.
