I was round at my mother in laws yesterday, whilst there she was telling me she had her lawn mower serviced and that it cost her 200 quid. She showed me the bill and the labour rate was 45 quid an hour?
Now whilst I understand overhead and profit quite well it just peeves me that as a joiner we wouldn't be able to get anywhere near that and yet our skill set is in my opinion far higher, our tools far more expensive and yet I think the general public would baulk at paying more than say 25 quid an hour.
I'm not having a rant over se, as we only do commercial and generally I can charge much higher rates. I'm just annoyed that our trade is held in low regard in comparison to someone who services lawn mowers.

Re: Thought I'd put it in here
My local small garage charges £50 an hour but they rarely put more than a few hours on the bill so the total never gets objectionable. Wish I could charge that much. Then again I'm owed money from a firm that went into insolvency, Ernst and Young the actuators have been charging around £800 per hour which is obscene especially as they have dragged it out for nearly 10 years so now there is little left.

I think it's more important to look at the bigger picture.

Do you think he is flat out 52 weeks per year?
Has he any chance of expanding his business into a multi million pound turnover like you have.
He has dirty oily hands, with a green tinge.

Totally see and get that, but I was thinking more along the lines of perception.
Ie why do the public see £45 an hour is ok for lawn mower servicing but not for Joinery?
I am only musing about it really.
Tower bridge fell over on my wall so had to have it redone, looks good again now!!
