Don`t ya hate it when

I nipped to the mother in laws last wednesday, as she had requested i take out a back boiler & gas fire that had been decommissioned a few months before when i fitted her some new central heating.

All was going well, boiler was out & she just wanted the opening making a little bigger & plastering out so she could get straight for xmas, after which she would make up her mind, what she was going to put in the opening.

I started knocking a few bricks out on the right hand side, took out the lintel, then move to the left side, that`s when disaster struck

I`ll let the picture tell the story



The left side had been so knocked about when the back boiler had been fitted that the pillar just fell to pieces, it didn`t help that the soil pipe that ran in the pipe box & to get the 1" boiler pipes round it they`d removed most of the brick work, gawd knows how it remained intact so long.

So a steady mornings work soon turned into a bit of a nightmare , which by the end of the day looked like this.






I had work booked in for Thursday, so today, FRIDAY, i returned to try & sort things out

I made good progress, M in L is happy as the opening is bigger than she thought she`d get & thinks she`ll have some sort of electric fire, hence the white pipe duct in the hearth, just skimming & tiling the hearth left to do

Went today to get the plastering finished, also managed to tile the hearth M in L chose 4"x4" slate.





Sorry about the quality of the pics, it was dark outside when i took the snaps on my I-phone, & the main room light wasn`t up to much , Just grouting & fitting the skirt left to do

Went & grouted today, typically the plaster hadn`t dried enough to fit the skirting, my fault shouldn`t have used fire resistant board, hay ho, at least that wont take long.

The chimney is vented, only you can`t see from the photos, as it`s not the best idea to take the air for venting directly from the room other wise you loose the heat PDQ from that room.

I might be daft, but not daft enough to take a chance of getting grief off the MIL (& in turn from SWMBO) when damp starts showing through on the up stairs chimney breast.
