The server has been playing up lately. I don't know why. It happens randomly, sometimes repeatedly in one day and then nothing for a while. I generally just restart the server so if you do see it feel free to drop me an email (or a text if you have my number), although sometimes it just freezes everything which includes my email addresses. I'm monitoring it occassionally through the day but I work for the ambulance service now so sometimes I just don't know there is a problem, and sometimes I need to be at a real computer to fix it properly.

I'm in contact with the server company to find out what is happening and I'm considering switching to a managed* server so that the other admins can reset it if it goes wonky, but that is a lot of work to transfer things over and I won't be able to do it for a few weeks.

Sorry guys, I'll try to get it sorted soon.

* basically at the moment we have a dedicated server, which is like having our own computer that I physically have to manage. A managed server is the same speed, but the host manages upgrades and should fix some problems automatically. Unfortunately they won't just start to manage ours, I would have to purchase a managed server, and then transfer everything across.

But seriously .. if this is a paid for service, then it isn't really good enough is it ?
Is there no come back to the supplier ?

The crux of it is, a dedicated server is my responsibility unless I can prove there is a fault at their end. The fact the server works fine for days on end suggests the problem is more likely than not at my end - i.e perhaps it needs a reinstall of the software, maybe tweaking some settings etc. Unfortunately, finding the problem is the time consuming bit, and I just do not have time at the moment to do it. I can't start a reinstall and then come back to it later.

I have 4 rest days 6-9th November where I hope to get it sorted - until then I'll just have to restart it when it goes tits up.

I'm finding that the board index page shrinks as soon as it is opened; that's when using an iPad. It's been doing this for several days and does it every time so may help you locate the fault??

I've just spent a week trying to fix my own computer, in the end I've lost all my accounts, emails and I've ended up on Windows 8.1

You have my sympathies Keith, after buying everyone else in the family an ipad & various other Apple devices they got me an ipad of my own last Christmas, I've only switched my laptop on twice since getting it, I even do my accounts on my ipad using the numbers app.

I wouldn't go back to Windows if you paid me, well that & the family wouldn't go back to all my moaning about it, if I'm honest I think that's why they got me the ipad in the first place
