New moderator

I just wanted to let you all know that we have a new moderator

Steve/Promhandicam is now a global moderator (a mod in all areas basically) so try not to p*ss him off too much :lol:

Well done Steve.

I will preface my next comment by saying that I think Steve will be a great moderator and fully support his appointment, however...

In the era of subscribers who contribute to the financial running of the forum, shouldn't something like the appointment of a new moderator be the subject of at least a discussion, if not something as democratic as a vote?

I've created this section just for those of you who have made a financial contribution to the upkeep of this forum. Any major changes will be posted in here for your consultation and if you have any requests, we'll actually listen to them if posted here (maybe...)

We didnt think it was a big deal and it had been asked for .
By removing the subscriber tools because of a few we needed some one we could trust to help out . We couldnt think of anyone so we drew straws and prom won or lost depending on how you look at it :lol:

Well since you mention it, there's another change carried out unilaterally without discussion. Again, not a big deal, but not done in what I thought was the spirit of the subscription era. I personally don't mind the forum being controlled by a small group who make decisions rather than a democracy, but you can't say it's one thing, then do another.

It has always been controlled by the Admin and Mods . Nothing has changed . Is Jacob at your house ? :lol:

This has nothing to do with Jacob, it's about wether the forum is any different/better as a result of introducing subscriptions, but as you say

Im just trying to add as much information as i can for you in each post before there is another reply .
The subscriber tools had been abused by one person for personal gain . Calls for the ignore member button where listened to and the only way to do that was to remove subscriber tools .
Having done that Admin needed help with the spam and new member posts . Steve had offered to help out a few times and i have worked with him so i know he is a level headed guy who can be trusted

There is no more to it than that .

That is up to you . Admin have always paid to run this forum and it was the members that wanted to contribute so we allowed them . Admin where always happy to pay for this place for you to enjoy and still are should you decide not to donate .
It isnt a fee its a donation to a place we all want to enjoy .

Let's remember one thing, the donations were simply to fund the purchase of a dedicated server as the old server was slow and regularly crashed. When I asked for donations I didn't promise that you would get anything other than this forum continuing to be available, and it running quicker. You didn't pay to become part of a committee. I (and the other mods) are incredibly grateful for the donations, and as you are regular posters and donators I think it only right that you get your say and that your opinions carry more weight, but I can't have every decision going through a vote or nothing would ever get done - someone always disagrees. Your opinions are listened to whenever they are made, even about minor changes after we have made them, but we will always discuss major changes before they are made.

I consider major changes to include - closing the forum, a change in the 3 core admins, a significant change (introduction) in forum rules or other changes that we consider to detrimentally affect our members. The appointment of a new mod doesn't fit into any of those, and therefore I consider it a decision for the admins. The fact I posted this thread allows you to discuss it, and if there are reasonable issues raised as to why Prom isn't a suitable mod, then his position can be reconsidered, but no one seems to have any objections.

With regards to subscriber powers - I decided that those of you who contributed would get a separate area and some very basic mod tools to allow you to remove spam yourselves but this was recently abused and was removed until I have time to set it up in a different way so that I can remove 'powers' from individuals rather than the 'group' as a whole. This was explained in the 'So then...' thread.

In case the mods are feeling put upon, I'm happy to contribute and for the mods to carry on doing the donkey work. Too many people trying to have input usually results in inaction in my experience. And while having the ability to delete posts is fun it could be misused, so the fewer people with that power the better.

personally, I Liked having the 'Mod' button

is there no way to change the privileges so low level 'mods' can just approve or disapprove new posts ?
(Which is what I thought the idea was to start with ) just to stop the spammers.

You didn't have much more than that the last time but as soon as you have any mod permissions you are considered a moderator and therefore can't be ignored - not a problem with a few mods, but when you have 56 of the most regular posters, it just makes it more likely that one of them will want to ignore the other. Frankly, this shouldn't be a problem on this forum as I assumed everyone was mature and sensible enough to be able to see a post and not respond to it if it annoyed them, but it appears that not everyone is capable of it and people asked for the ignore feature to be made available again - the only way to do this is to remove the mod permissions and the only way for me to do it quickly was to remove it from everyone.
