Where can I get 8ft logs

Postby Scooby10 » Thu Feb 18, 2016 1:21 pm

Hi,

First post and complete novice.

I want to embark on a project to make a totem pole - don't ask - to go outside.

I will be using chisels and have bought a small range to get me started. I've been on a course and made a few small faces to get some experience.

I now want to embark on the totem pole but want to know 1) what kind of wood would be best to use given the hand tooling and the ultimate placing outdoors and 2) where would I be able to get a piece of wood around 2m long with a diameter of around 250-300mm?

Any advice welcome - I'm based north of Liverpool if any suppliers are in North West.

Thanks
S

I would try local Arboriculturists and when they are felling something suitable they may leave it in the length you require and possibly deliver

Douglas Fir is used by a lot of them chainsaw "artists" as well as western red cedar. Got lots of the stuff knocking about our yard. I suppose you are in Devon or Dorset? I'm in the colder part of Wales.

a bit like this but with the bark on.

If you do go down the Douglas Fir route then make sure you can stand the smell- especially if being worked on in a confined space. I know some folk like it but this one doesn't!

I'm in Liverpool unfortunately. How much would a log like that cost?

About £12.00 a cubic foot. Roughly £100.00 for a 12 foot beam, 10" x 10". Plus VAT and collected.
