Profile planes

I volunteer at a charity on Thursdays. We refurbish tools that are donated to us here in the UK and assemble kits for trades, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, sewing machines, and carpentry and send them to rural Tanzania. We get some great things and it's a joy for a tool geek like me to poke around in the bins looking for goodies.

Today a gentleman came in with a chest full of profile planes for mouldings. There must have been forty of them all with different designs of cutter. The chest was built to hold them. It made me a bit sad to think that tools like this are no longer used.

I talked to the shop manager about them and he figures they will be cut down flat and straight blades put into them since fancy mouldings are not useful in rural Africa.

If anyone collects these things let me know. I'll forward some pictures and you can tell me if you'd be willing to "support" the charity in exchange for a few planes (they were made in a shop on Edgware road, London. Must have been quite a while ago)

These might be worth a good deal of money, some of them go for big money especially sets of hollows and rounds. At a minimum, you could probably average £3-£5 on ebay.

So I'll give you a tenner for the lot, obviously - seriously though, don't chop them down, sell them.

Wasn't Tyzack and sons on the Edgware road ?

Not sure if Tyzacks were in Edgware road W Tyzack and sons were in a huge beautiful building directly opposite Shoreditch town hall in Old street. I went there often as a small boy to fetch spares for various tools for my father. There is another Tyzack about 1/2 mile away from that shop in Kingsland road C Tyzack also selling tools and machinery for the trade mainly.
