Star Delta

Postby MJ80 » Mon Feb 29, 2016 11:24 am

I have finally tracked down a saw that will do me for the interim. Its an old Martin t17 with a small sliding bed.
The dealer says there is a problem with the star delta switch, in that it only works on one phase in delta.
I'm not great with electrics so here are the questions:

1 Is the switch broken?
2 Does the motor need some help -windings???

Kind regards,

Marcus

Sounds like the dealer might be talking ballcocks!

1)Delta is the running mode, Star is used for starting only. A star delta system running in delta only would blow the main breakers at switch on.
2) No three phase motor will start/run on single phase.
3) The same windings are used for both star and delta mode, the only difference being how they are connected for starting and running.

What self respecting dealer would not get a machine fixed so he can sell it at full market price? You can bet that he took it in for next to nothing in a non running condition. It is just taking up space in his store.

The most probable thing is a fault with the switching. A modern set up would use a soft start module with the motor in permanent delta. you could just buy that maybe £100-£300 according to power rating.

There could be a wiring fault. I had one a few months back where the wires in the motor had shorted and just needed tidying up.

Worst case could be a winding fault needing a rewind think £600 plus.

So if the machine is sound and you can beat the dealer down to a really rock bottom price then might be worth a punt.

I'm happy to try and advise/help you get it running by email but I only do local house calls (Southampton area). You will have to do the donkey work.
