coloured glass splash backs

Just thought i'd ask before i speak to morrells, Has anyone painted glass? I've got a kitchen coming up an they want coloured glass splash backs. The glass is opti float toughened as its clearer then normal toughened. Just wondering if any one has done it and if so, where did you get your paint from, process, drying time etc? Thanks.

I've spray painted glass (not splash backs) with celly .. just thin it well, so you can adjust the cover with each coat.. I always painted the back side .. but don't know how that would work with adhesives when installing ?

I thought the same thing about sticking it on as illbe painting the back aswell. cheers.

I had quite a few done. Where about are you in the UK. I used a couple of firms, one would template and fit, the other one would just supply.

Make sure you use Low Iron if a light colour, it'll change the paint colour with the pigments in the glass.
We spray all our own glass, using a "glass paint" or standard AC. Make sure you put the first coat on clean, so not to trap anything, then use the rest
of the tin on the back. You don't want to be able to see your hand if shining a torch from behind. If you do, you may start seeing the rear wall and any colour variations coming through. Only use mirror adhesive to stick or it's eat the paint.

If you can a glass supplier to spray, it may work out around the same cost, please you can get them to put a safety backing on too.

Even low iron glass changes the colour. It took 3 tries with 2 companies to get our splashbacks to match the yellow laminate, even though the paint was to the same NCS colour ref and was perfect in the tin on the first two tries. On the first two tries (with low iron glass) it just washed out to an insipid pale pastel lemony yellow, rather than a vibrant orangy-yellow. In the end, I had to bump the hue one notch further to orange and the chromaticity up about three notches towards intense to get a true colour match through the glass. Being fussy cost me a bundle... Lesson for me (as a customer) was to get a sample done even if it has to be paid for.

Due to thickness too. I used low iron for white, and it's white and looks white against the corian worktops (Also white) but this was 4mm thick.

We have colour matched a few with using the same paint as the cabinets. It's slightly different but not noticable. We always tell the client it's going to change slighly, never a perfect match.

We did the same once, photoshopping the colours to try and work out the paint colour, bringing it to the original once on the back of the glass. Far too much messing about in all honesty.

This was 4mm. It may have been some sort of spectrum oddity, as the paint both glaziers sourced (from different companies) was right against the NCS sample card, and if you put the sample card behind the glass it looked fine, but on application it just washed out. It was miles off, not just a bit. We have a white bit too behind the cooker, and the first glazier's go at that was fine - you can tell it's different but not enough to matter.

so i can just use normal ac paint then? do you just wipe the glass with thinners, then spray. While im picking brain cells. whats best fir sticking, tape or silicone? Thanks.

Only a one-off from me, but I used MS polymer to stick it up, including a bit which goes horizontally under an overhang and it hasn't dropped yet in erm years. Have to be v careful with silicone as the acetic acid in the non-neutral cure stuff will attack paint.

I wipe the glass with thinners first, clean any finger prints etc.

Don't use silicone, i'll attack the paint as Jake metioned. Us mirror adhesive.

(they recommended the second glazier and were good to deal with, the first glazier used Movac paint).

I would use proper glass paint, I think it is silane modified so that glass's hydrophilic nature doesn't break down the bond with the paint over time in humidity.

ive just recived a nice box from avco with a selection of free paints in to try. Very helpfull on the phone an reasonably priced. I never get any free paint from morells or symphony!
