Old Furniture

Greetings, Oh Sage One's,
I have today bought a wardrobe. It's made by Maples, probably in the 50's, and is of solid mahogany. Since it is 60 odd plus years old, pristine it is not, but it's not bad. My wife (God Bless Her) is trying to reinstate some of the original lustre, and is rubbing in 'Starwax' bees-wax. It says the only ingredients are bees-wax and turpentine. But it's smearing. Doesn't seem to matter how much we rub, it's still smearing.
Does anyone have a clue as to what is causing this, and more to the point - what we should be using?

usually rub it on, let it dry, then buff it up

That's what we did. I was wondering if a previouys 'polish' had been used that would create a problem (like fisheyes when a silicone polish had been applied) - do you get me?
Anyway, I would appreciate if you have any further ideas.

Do you have a link to the wax you are using ?
Is it like Mr Sheen , or a proper wood finishing wax ?
Did you do any prep ? wiping with white spirit etc ?
