Can I use car paint on top of a wood primer?

Postby york33 » Fri May 15, 2015 12:44 pm

Afternoon all

Anyone know if I can use a car paint on top of a normal waterborne primer (for wood)? Just a bit of a random request to spray some furniture funky metallic colours?

Figured there's a huge amount of readily available funky coloured car paint and I couldn't think why not!

cheers
Dave

I have used car paint on timber before but using all the relevant primer etc, worked well.

If no one can answer there is only one way to find out.

Jawel paints is always a good place to start.

Thanks Mark, good enough for me. I've told them yes, no problem at all - as you do - and will find out if it's possible if they confirm order :-)

I've used car lacquer on top of acrylic paint and it messed it all up (the paint below dissolved and warped) so I'd suggest using car primer/paint/lacquer and not using waterbased... but good luck, let us know how it turns out...

I have used 2pac over precat primer. It was fine.

Apologies, delayed reaction! Well, they've signed up for it, so we'll find out in a couple of months when I get onto making/painting.

Do you actually get much in the way of waterborne car paint? I thought the world had moved that way, but Google says no! I was going to stick with that as that's what my 'normal' paint is.

I had a look at Jawel paints, more confused, 2K (is that 2 pack?), 2K none iso, cellulose, synthetic.......taking the various H&S issues as a given, which one should I get?

The paint world is leaning toward water based now. It's part of a legislation move regarding the voc content. In the next decade it will more than likely be illegal to spray anything else other than water

So in answer yes there is plenty of water based about. Expect it to be more expensive though. Don't ask me why.

2K is two pack.

My experience is limited to the ones containing isocyanates. Evil stuff (with respect to your lungs) but great to work with.
