natural finish

hello all

Is there any way after sanding down a lovely bit of english ash that I can keep looking exactly the same, i have used osman wax and tried a bit of danish oil, looks lovely but i prefer the look after a fresh bit of sanding

try a water based PU.
Any finish will alter the colour, but I've had good results with water based PU varnish for keeping it light.

test on a scrap 1st !

Symphony coatings do a 2% sheen polyurethane lacquer that will look as though you have done nowt to it...

Only any use if you are set to spray of course!

I finally gave up on Symphony and moved to Morrells these last couple of weeks

Inability to deliver paint in one piece! Every order for the last year at least has been broken en route.

It goes like this, place order, wait a few days while it doesn't turn up. Ring up, they chase up courier, usually they tell me it's been damaged and courier is returning it to them. Wait a few days for courier to return to them. Ring up to see if courier has returned to them, then wait a few more days for them to courier more paint. Open it up quickly on arrival, if it arrives and quickly decant it from the tubs it's arrived in as even though it's arrived, they're still seeping paint out.

They always make it in the end and at their expense (obv) to be fair. They pack the tubs really well, really strong boxes round them, loads of bubblewrap, ect. But they're obviously just sh&te plastic tubs, or the courier is doing a happy dance on them for a laugh! Paint's good, they're polite, etc, but I just can't be bothered with it any more, they're probably glad to see the back of me too!

Hmmmm .. just been to check the tins .. Oil based and water based tins are "almost" identical.. but the water based one doesn't say PU
So I could be wrong on that one .. sorry OP !

The brand I use is Johnstones

The water based varnish colours the wood less than the oil based


EDIT .. just googled, and yes, you can get water based PU

arr no spray gun im afraid just working from shed so not much room, did get A portable thicknesser which save me a lot of time processing the raw timber, lot of work getting rid of the plane marks tho 2 steps forward but only 1 step back ha

I've used Liberon Kitchen & Bathroom Varnish on a number of ash tables and it was the most natural I could find.

It is also simple to apply by hand.

As always, try it on a test piece beforehand. If you're near Nottingham send me a pm.

I suppose I am lucky as I have a branch about 7 or 8 miles away in the city centre, and they use their own vans to drop it off to me.

Sometimes we have ordered at say 11am and they've delivered it by lunch time.

Out of interest Mark, why did you switch to Symphony? i've just started using Morrells, but have had the Symphony rep over too.

Chestnut micro-crystalline wax is pretty good. But I also use AquaCoat SP from Smith and Rodgers. It is water based and designed for floors but does not colour the original wood very much.

It is impossible to find a finish that will leave ash looking like it has just been sanded. That's the reality.

Danish Oil is the spawn of Satan. I hate the stuff. If you must use oil then use a more modern product like Osmo.

Karl - I felt that the service from morrells slipped, and the quality too.

Because of the nature of the business, all fast track and everything needed yesterday we rely on fast deliveries and communication.
