Oil or paint it ?

Just replacing the wood on the gable of my place as it was falling off ( for 18 years ) Ive used oak and i'm in two minds about what finish to use .
I live on the main road so the rest of the woodwork will probably be painted black .
Any opinions ?

Combine the two & go for linseed oil paint

Might do that as i have to brush it on and i'm scraping the other timber back to bare wood . I think i'll leave the oak uprights clear linseed though .
What was that linseed paint called ?

I wouldn't oil the Oak Jase.Once it goes slivery grey it won't look nice against the pebbledashed panels. I would go for solvent based Architectural Solignum . They do alsorts of colours and ebony (black would look fine) and it doesn't crack or peel.

I've oiled it now

It does look smart , i just need to keep on top of that but given the van with ladders is parked right under it and it just takes a wipe to add more oil ...... Its not going to happen is it :lol:

I cut the paint back today

Also jumped up on the roof to check the pointing and the whole hip was loose :shock:

All done now and the whole job has cost me £40 , £30 was on paint .
Your oak looks alot nicer up there than it would as doors don't you think :lol:

Borrowed from a mate and now i'm probably going to have to store it but that's fine by me . I wouldn't have done the work if i had to pay for the scaffold . Cheapest quote i had was £600 and that was with two houses on the road having it done at the same time and only one lift .
With this i could just swap it around and get to where i wanted . Time to replace the side shed while i still have it !

If the Chinese can use bamboo then I don't see why you can't use 4 x 2's. In fact I've used timber to make scaffolding when replacing a roof on a house in Congo when I was working out there.

No , the f**ker sold it for £165 a day before the auction ended :evil:
