Pine wood panel finish

Hello All,

I am very new to wood work. The carpenter who I hired to build a fitted wardrobe did a runner and I am trying to finish off the job myself. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The wardrobe is built using pine wood panels from Selco for the exterior and MDF for the interiors.

I am confused about how to finish it. There seems to be loads of different ways(Oil, Wax, Stain, Dye) of doing it and jargon which I don't understand.

Do it need a undercoat or sealer before using any of these. Any advise on this is highly appreciated.

welcome to the forum - hopefully the carpenter you employed isn't a member here! with regards to your question, the finish will depend a little on what colour you want to end up with. personally, I would use a product called osmo polyx. You may have to go to a decorators merchants or you can order online but this is the easiest finish to apply and is very hard wearing. It will give you a natural colour, although it will be darker than the unfinished panels. a little goes a long way, so you may get away with a 750ml tin, depending on the size of the wardrobe. if you want a darker finish, then I would go for one of the osmo wood wax finishes - buy a sample and test on a scrap piece of pine first. If you decide to buy online, then try wood finishes direct who are a reputable retailer.

I am looking to finish it to a light dark brown colour. Similar to Oak.

Before applying the oil or wax, will I need any sealant on top of it? Also how different are wax finish compared to oil finish.

Is there any website or forum where I can see the end product of different finishes.

But when I apply it on the wood it is not even. From what I read from the web, they recommend to apply a sealer coat first to avoid the knots. I am not sure where to buy them.

Also I am thinking after applying this oil, I will put some clear wax on top of it for the shine. I bought 2 waxes and both were coloured. Where can I get a clear wax which will not have any colour but just give shine on the existing colour. Any help is highly appreciated.

I use liberon black bison clear wax which is readily available. For the issue with the uneven colour, if a piece of wood starts out with lighter and darker grain then whatever finish you apply, other than paint, the colour variations will to a greater or lesser extent show through.
