Help! Advice needed for drop leaf table resurrection

Hello!

I recently bought a second hand lebus drop leaf table, perfect for my kitchen to have for just two of us or extend out for guests - BUT - as you can see it needs done tlc to bring it back to former glories.

It seems to be solid wood, with I believe a veneer in the top part. It clearly has had some kind of varnish it finish which has faded over the years, and I've sanded some of that down, still to finish that job though....

How would you guys go about getting this back to its best? My experience of woodwork was a long time ago, basically first two years of secondary, but I'm game to get this looking good, it's a kind of quirky, I like it a lot!

I'm no restoration expert, but I've played with similar projects, I used toung oil on one project, furniture wax on another, both worked well.

That looks like Oak to me? I doubt its veneered. If Oak boiled linseed oil will bring it up a treat, it will also leave it a very workable/useable table, hot cups etc wont do any harm to it. I have a large Oak table in my dining room finished with boiled linseed oil, I put hot pans etc on it with no worries what so ever. Every few months I clean it with hot soapy water and rub new oil onto it to bring it back to life.
What kind of finish are you after?
