Wondering if anyone can recommend a source in London for suitable wood for turning?
first turning project in 20 years!

Not sure whereabouts you are in London but S L Timber near Croydon or Surrey Timbers near Guildford are 2 that come to mind.

South London, so they work for me. only after ~5" square bits for now i think.

I've not been to SL Hardwoods (not timbers) for a while but have a look at their website to see if they do what you want. Kevin at Surrey Timbers definitely does have a lot of turning blanks but give him a call to make sure he is going to be there before visiting.
