Oak Island

I was contacted by the BBC and asked if I could make a mobile island unit for a family
which would be on DIY SOS. Between us this is what we came up with. I only had 9 days
to make and deliver this. I must say it is one of the best things I have done. The husband
was a super fit guy, did the Edinburgh marathon and 2 weeks later ended up having a stem
cell stroke which then led to him having locked in syndrome for 9 months. he is now in a
wheel chair, although will never fully recover things are looking a lot better. Should be on tv
later in the year hope you like

Everything is done for free, and they really do it in 9 days. the quality of the work is spot on aswell,
I`ve had a good year so it was nice to give something back to a very deserving family.

It's also heartening to hear that the TV world isn't as shallow and self serving as I expected, which is a great thing as it makes a programme I'd always thought was quite good... Actually is

Good on you Paul - that looks superb. It is a credit to you that even though you were doing the job gratis that you still did it to your usual high standards with a beaded face frame and solid top. A couple of questions, do you buy worktops in or make them up yourself? Also for the legs, do you laminate these up or manage to find (what looks to be) 4" thick stock?

I made the worktops which were 56mm thick (weighed a ton) the legs were laminated and the sides were oak veneered mdf,
finish was 10% sheen lacquered main body and the top had 4 coats of hard wax oil.

I too like that, especially as it seems to have been made under some pressure because of limited time. Photographs of pieces set in workshops can be deceiving regarding their size, but am I right in thinking the height is about 750 - 800 mm, therefore tailored to a wheelchair user's needs? Slainte.

Just watched this, (not sure if it was a repeat or not???) and being a retired Police officer myself would just like to congratulate you on your altruism and craftsmanship dedicated to a police colleague

The humour in the programme makes me cry with laughter and I would sooner watch this than some of the alleged comedy currently available

You should be immensely proud of your efforts and where they were directed

Thanks very much for your kind comments, when they sent me the brief about the project, as I was reading about Richard and Jude`s situation
the tears were running down my face. I new then I had to do it, What a lovely family they are, the island couldn't have gone to a nicer family. I must admit I felt very proud as I watched it last night. Just need an agent now

The casters were a 50mm double roller swivel wheel, with brakes on
all of them, they could take 400kg. I think I got them off ebay about £25
they worked an absolute treat.

Watched the program this afternoon and was amazed at what the different trades managed to achieve in such a short space of time. The island looked fantastic in situ, and went well with everything else. Well done again Paul.
