Oak clad newel stair refit. Picture heavy!!

Dogleg stairs that needed changing to Oak.
Newels were built up using the Whitehill Mitre-lock spindle block which allowed them to be clamped up quite easily.
Strings were packed out to make things work with MDF which they were going to paint but changed their mind and it worked really well with the Oak.
Here are the pictures which more or less tell the story of this job

How did you get on with the corners of the MDF and the mitre lock? I did a job with wenge mdf and it was difficult to make a smooth edge without risking going through the veneer or creating splinters.

Yes it was a mare of a job to get right as it was mostly done off the cuff
Would be nice to have a couple more to do, now all the sorting out is under my belt and give me a chance to make a bit of dosh

The props start at 1600 and extend up to 3000. These were either from Aldi or Lidl and really do work well (100% no slip back)

We would like to change the banisters, spindles etc but then the turned newel posts just wouldnt match. We are in the wigan area, I suppose Leicestershire -ish is too far away from us to quote for the job? Do you know of any trusted joiners who could match up to the job?

I have a single newel post on a landing that needs cladding as per your example here. I'm happy to cut / fit it in myself, but I'm not geared up to produce the box itself. Would you be willing to manufacture / ship it for me? (You could have the whole job, but I don't think you'd want to travel to Wiltshire!)

First post - been following this thread, very interesting post and great craftsmanship!

Any carpenters within the Midlands area (Redditch) want to undertake a job the same as this?
I have the Stair box newel oak cladding, base rails, hand rails and glass panels all ready for someone to fit and install.
Two separate staircases and a separate large newel support at circa 3 meters (part of kite staircase).

Oh, also skirting board and architrave fitment required at same time.

Sounds like you have a similar project to me, what are you planning to with the stingers ? mine are orange varnished softwood and look awful, I was considering an Oak veneer but not sure if this will work so may have to paint them. Also it would be good to hear how the Stairbox cladding works out for you, I have not ordered mine yet.

Anyone else any thoughts on how to deal with stair stringers in a refurb.

I bought mine from stairbox, they are really helpful onthe phone etc.
Project is in hand at the moment, I have clad 3 posts and 2 to go.
To begin with I was a bit worried about the finish on the corners (a bit rough as supplied) but having sanded the corners after gluing up they came up great. Take time with the clamping up and making sure there is a good application of glue on all edges and it works.
My biggest problem was poor alignment of the original newel posts, they weren't straight so had to shave them in a couple of places.

Hi there just looking at your handy work with cladding the newel posts in oak ,they look fantastic. I may have a similar job coming up and was wondering if you would give me some advice. Would it be possible to clad the existing post so that there is only a couple of mm around the existing post and not such a large gap as in yours .I understand that you probably had a reason for this,also how did you fix the cladding to the post was it with pins
